Biography

Owner and CEO of Massage Therapy Works Richard received his basic training from the prestigious Muscular Therapy Institute in Cambridge and graduated in 1995. His initial fascination with structural alignment began while working with ballet & modern dancers at the Dance Complex in Central Square. With Richard, no two massage experiences are alike. His massages are like interpretive dances in that each one grows out of the messages of the muscles, the energy of the moment, the responses of his client and even the music in the room. His approach is not only creative and individual, but also highly skillful. He has a natural gift for sensing what amount of muscle pressure will be healing, and he focuses his movements carefully to optimize the goal of bringing you not only relief from your pain but also restoring balance — structurally and energetically.

Featured in The Improper Bostonian magazine [October 11 – 24, 2006], Richard was recognized for his unique approach to healing structural imbalances which he has been developing throughout his career as a bodyworker. He is trained in Therapeutic massage, CranioSacral Therapy, Deep Tissue massage, Prenatal massage, Sports Injury massage, Positional Release, Neuromuscular Re-education, and Structural Integration. Richard also has had instruction in Visceral Manipulation (abdominal massage) and Shiatsu. Now providing Massage Instruction for Couples.

Services Offered:

CranioSacral Re-balancing

CranioSacral Therapy works with the subtle bones of the skull and sacrum to balance the cerebrospinal fluid which influences many bodily functions. A very gentle approach to re-balancing soft tissue structures often compromised by injury or trauma, it has proven to be very effective in the treatment of chronic pain, migraine headaches, low-back pain, TMJD, and other stress-related symptoms.

Usually only one or two sessions are needed to help make a significant change.

Pricing

  • 30-minutes: $70
  • 45-minutes: $90
  • 1-hour: $110

Deep Tissue Massage

Quite different from “a Therapeutic Massage with Extra Pressure,” our Deep Tissue Massage focuses on releasing muscle restrictions (adhesions) and re-balancing structural tension (holding patterns) running through the several layers of soft tissue (muscle). Deep Tissue Massage requires a much slower pace than our Therapeutic Massage and more than one session is usually necessary for better results and/or resolution. Very effective if you have strained a muscle resulting in limited (and possibly painful) movement.

IMPORTANT: While it is not unusual for some people to experience bruising and pain for several days following treatment it does not happen to everyone. Soon the pain will decrease and you will begin to experience a range of movement you haven’t had for a very long while. Eventually, that every-day pain thing will be just a distant memory.

PLEASE NOTE: 30-MINUTES WILL ONLY ALLOW ENOUGH TIME TO WORK ON ONE REGION OF THE BODY (muscles of your thigh, calf, forearms or hands, etc.). One hour is highly recommended for your first session.

Integrative Bodywork

AN ACUTE INJURY USUALLY OCCURS WHEN WE’VE PUSHED OUR MUSCLES BEYOND THEIR NORMAL RANGE-OF-MOTION OFTEN RESULTING IN PAIN.

Integrative Bodywork combines several healing bodywork modalities with therapeutic massage. Some of those modalities might include: CranioSacral therapy, Trigger Point therapy, Myofascial Release, Deep Tissue, Positional Release, Neuromuscular Facilitation, Reiki, and acupressure. Very effective in treating some chronic pain issues such as sciatica, acute injuries such as whiplash, sports-related injuries, carpal tunnel and other repetitive stress injuries (RSIs), plus physical traumas such as accidents involving falling-down, bicycling, and automobiles.

1-hour usually gives the therapist enough time to focus on those areas of the body associated with the pain or injury. Several treatments are often necessary to understand and resolve the issue(s).

Massage for Children

FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 18

The pressures of school academics and intramural sports sometimes takes a toll on a child’s body. Stress can affect a child’s ability to sleep soundly and/or stay focused on daily lessons. Athletic injuries can occur at any age and often do. Soccer, for example, requires a great deal of running which can result in very tight ITBands and calf muscles.

A 30-minute massage is recommended for a young child when too much stress is suspected as being a causative factor in the child’s health, or a longer 45 minute session when the issue is a chronic one.

PLEASE NOTE: A PARENT’S PRESENCE IS REQUIRED.

A sports massage therapist may use their forearm or the palm of their hand to bear down on the muscles in your legs and back to separate and relax them and their fingers to put direct pressure on a muscle in spasm, which can be painful but will reduce your pain later. Along with massage we’ll combine deep tissue massage and stretching when necessary to help maximize your muscles’ potential.

Biofield Tuning: Energy Flush

[biofield_tuning]

Biofield Tuning: Clearing Your Emotional Energy

Biofield Tuning is a unique process designed to shift patterns & rhythms of the electromagnetic energy that flows through & around your body. It is not stress that kills us but how we respond to stress. Being grounded & centered is the cure for much of what ails us. Using tuning forks as a vibrational tool we are able to identify events in your life when you reacted with an intense emotion such as fear or anger. These charged memories literally lock us into restrictive patterns of limited response to life’s daily challenges. The work is done with you fully-clothed while lying face-up on a massage table. 90 minutes is needed and one or two follow-up sessions may be necessary.

PLEASE NOTE: Biofield Tuning can sometimes produce what is known as a Herxheimer Reaction, also known as detoxification. This sometimes lasts 1-3 days and in rare instances can last up to two weeks. Typical symptoms of “cleansing” can be: headaches, sore throat, sweating, chills, fever, body aches, joint & muscle pain, nausea, general malaise and other flu-like symptoms. Cancer and other complex illnesses, pregnancy and pacemakers are contraindicated.

Testimonials

I started going to Massage Therapy Works a couple of years to address running injuries and recently returned after a bike accident. Every time I go I feel far better than before, and with more knowledge about my body and how to facilitate healing and balance, and prevent injury. The last couple of times I’ve seen Richard. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the body and a range of treatments. He’s gentle, thorough, and communicates about what he’s doing and why it’s helpful. I was very impressed by his ability to sense anything that might be uncomfortable and help me release tension and pain without pushing too hard. I’ve had a lot of chronic tension in my body that causes me pain and immobility and after just a couple of visits, Richard has helped to remove pain, relax my body, and increase flexibility and movement. He also took some extra time to teach me a series of movements to keep my new range of motion. I now have a better understanding of how my body reacts to certain situations, and how to help it release stress.—Anna M. (Somerville)

I’ve been going to MTW for the past 7 years and have had all positive experiences. I’d highly reccomend them to anyone. I usually have a sports massage, and swear by them as an experienced runner (although they have a wide range of types of massage.) Richard is excellent and has helped me come back from and prevent many injuries- is hands down the best sports massage therapist I’ve ever worked with. My ITB thanks him!—Meredith S. (Cambridge)
