Richard Green

Biography

Owner and CEO of Massage Therapy Works Richard received his basic training from the prestigious Muscular Therapy Institute in Cambridge and graduated in 1995. His initial fascination with structural alignment began while working with ballet & modern dancers at the Dance Complex in Central Square. With Richard, no two massage experiences are alike. His massages are like interpretive dances in that each one grows out of the messages of the muscles, the energy of the moment, the responses of his client and even the music in the room. His approach is not only creative and individual, but also highly skillful. He has a natural gift for sensing what amount of muscle pressure will be healing, and he focuses his movements carefully to optimize the goal of bringing you not only relief from your pain but also restoring balance — structurally and energetically.

Featured in The Improper Bostonian magazine [October 11 – 24, 2006], Richard was recognized for his unique approach to healing structural imbalances which he has been developing throughout his career as a bodyworker. He is trained in Therapeutic massage, CranioSacral Therapy, Deep Tissue massage, Prenatal massage, Sports Injury massage, Positional Release, Neuromuscular Re-education, and Structural Integration. Richard also has had instruction in Visceral Manipulation (abdominal massage) and Shiatsu. Now providing Massage Instruction for Couples.

CranioSacral Re-balancing

CranioSacral Therapy works with the subtle bones of the skull and sacrum to balance the cerebrospinal fluid which influences many bodily functions. A very gentle approach to re-balancing soft tissue structures often compromised by injury or trauma, it has proven to be very effective in the treatment of chronic pain, migraine headaches, low-back pain, TMJD, and other stress-related symptoms.

Usually only one or two sessions are needed to help make a significant change.

Pricing

  • 30-minutes: $70
  • 45-minutes: $90
  • 1-hour: $110

Deep Tissue Massage

Quite different from “a Therapeutic Massage with Extra Pressure,” our Deep Tissue Massage focuses on releasing muscle restrictions (adhesions) and re-balancing structural tension (holding patterns) running through the several layers of soft tissue (muscle). Deep Tissue Massage requires a much slower pace than our Therapeutic Massage and more than one session is usually necessary for better results and/or resolution. Very effective if you have strained a muscle resulting in limited (and possibly painful) movement.

IMPORTANT: While it is not unusual for some people to experience bruising and pain for several days following treatment it does not happen to everyone. Soon the pain will decrease and you will begin to experience a range of movement you haven’t had for a very long while. Eventually, that every-day pain thing will be just a distant memory.

PLEASE NOTE: 30-MINUTES WILL ONLY ALLOW ENOUGH TIME TO WORK ON ONE REGION OF THE BODY (muscles of your thigh, calf, forearms or hands, etc.). One hour is highly recommended for your first session.

Integrative Bodywork

AN ACUTE INJURY USUALLY OCCURS WHEN WE’VE PUSHED OUR MUSCLES BEYOND THEIR NORMAL RANGE-OF-MOTION OFTEN RESULTING IN PAIN.

Integrative Bodywork combines several healing bodywork modalities with therapeutic massage. Some of those modalities might include: CranioSacral therapy, Trigger Point therapy, Myofascial Release, Deep Tissue, Positional Release, Neuromuscular Facilitation, Reiki, and acupressure. Very effective in treating some chronic pain issues such as sciatica, acute injuries such as whiplash, sports-related injuries, carpal tunnel and other repetitive stress injuries (RSIs), plus physical traumas such as accidents involving falling-down, bicycling, and automobiles.

1-hour usually gives the therapist enough time to focus on those areas of the body associated with the pain or injury. Several treatments are often necessary to understand and resolve the issue(s).

Massage for Children

FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 18

The pressures of school academics and intramural sports sometimes takes a toll on a child’s body. Stress can affect a child’s ability to sleep soundly and/or stay focused on daily lessons. Athletic injuries can occur at any age and often do. Soccer, for example, requires a great deal of running which can result in very tight ITBands and calf muscles.

A 30-minute massage is recommended for a young child when too much stress is suspected as being a causative factor in the child’s health, or a longer 45 minute session when the issue is a chronic one.

PLEASE NOTE: A PARENT’S PRESENCE IS REQUIRED.

A sports massage therapist may use their forearm or the palm of their hand to bear down on the muscles in your legs and back to separate and relax them and their fingers to put direct pressure on a muscle in spasm, which can be painful but will reduce your pain later. Biofield Tuning: Energy Flush

[biofield_tuning]

Biofield Tuning: Clearing Your Emotional Energy

Biofield Tuning is a unique process designed to shift patterns & rhythms of the electromagnetic energy that flows through & around your body. It is not stress that kills us but how we respond to stress. Being grounded & centered is the cure for much of what ails us. Using tuning forks as a vibrational tool we are able to identify events in your life when you reacted with an intense emotion such as fear or anger. These charged memories literally lock us into restrictive patterns of limited response to life’s daily challenges. The work is done with you fully-clothed while lying face-up on a massage table. 90 minutes is needed and one or two follow-up sessions may be necessary.

PLEASE NOTE: Biofield Tuning can sometimes produce what is known as a Herxheimer Reaction, also known as detoxification. This sometimes lasts 1-3 days and in rare instances can last up to two weeks. Typical symptoms of “cleansing” can be: headaches, sore throat, sweating, chills, fever, body aches, joint & muscle pain, nausea, general malaise and other flu-like symptoms. Cancer and other complex illnesses, pregnancy and pacemakers are contraindicated.

Testimonials

I started going to Massage Therapy Works a couple of years to address running injuries and recently returned after a bike accident. Every time I go I feel far better than before, and with more knowledge about my body and how to facilitate healing and balance, and prevent injury. The last couple of times I’ve seen Richard. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the body and a range of treatments. He’s gentle, thorough, and communicates about what he’s doing and why it’s helpful. I was very impressed by his ability to sense anything that might be uncomfortable and help me release tension and pain without pushing too hard. I’ve had a lot of chronic tension in my body that causes me pain and immobility and after just a couple of visits, Richard has helped to remove pain, relax my body, and increase flexibility and movement. He also took some extra time to teach me a series of movements to keep my new range of motion. I now have a better understanding of how my body reacts to certain situations, and how to help it release stress.—Anna M. (Somerville)

I’ve been going to MTW for the past 7 years and have had all positive experiences. I’d highly reccomend them to anyone. I usually have a sports massage, and swear by them as an experienced runner (although they have a wide range of types of massage.) Richard is excellent and has helped me come back from and prevent many injuries- is hands down the best sports massage therapist I’ve ever worked with. My ITB thanks him!—Meredith S. (Cambridge)

Jared Green

Biography

My name is Jared Green and I am a Licensed Massage Therapist and a Bodyworker. I am trained to assess my clients pain, dis-ease, and dysfunction and help them to restore sustainable balance. My area of expertise is Myofascial Release Therapy, which focuses on the connective tissue system of the body. When connective tissue is out of balance bodies tend to feel stiff, range of motion is reduced, chance of injury is increased, and circulation is compromised. Through Myofascial Release Therapy I am able to release knots and adhesions to ease pain but this is only a temporary relief as long as the conditions that created the dysfunction are still present. For a sustained improvement I educate clients about the nature of their pain, where it came from and why, and what they can do to prevent a re-occurance.

My other area of focus is shamanism, specifically Niasziih Healing from the Lipan Apache. Niasziih has the ability to dramatically increase self awareness, which helps clients feel connected to their lives as well as strengthen relationships. We all have patterns of disconnect and self-sabotage, most of which formed at a very young age. Through awareness we are able to regain control of our choices and create informed responses to events, rather than automated reactions.

Stress-reduction Massage

This is the kind you’re most likely to encounter at a spa. Stress-reduction massage can also induce a state of mind called the Relaxation Response, which has been shown to minimize the effects of stress and boost your immune system. Everyone knows that a stressful day will cause the muscles in your shoulders and neck to tighten. For some, symptoms can even include a tense jaw, back ache, fatigue and headaches. When you’re feeling overwhelmed and even simple movement is stiff, our Stress-reduction Massage is likely to bring you immediate relief.

For more severe or chronic pain you should consider our Therapeutic Massage.

Testimonials

Don’t have much to say except this place is amazing.  I’ve gone to see Jared two times now, and have been extremely satisfied. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff, and definitely give top notch massages. Can’t recommend it highly enough—Eric R. (Attleboro)

Jared has an uncanny ability to read your body and conscious and subconscious signals as he works. He pays close attention to breathing and reaction and establishes trust and communication throughout the process. With permission, he will really work your body and push you through the tension and stress that your muscles store. His hands intuitively seek out my sore spots and with gentle but firm intention, release (almost “pop”) the knots from my muscles.—RoseAnna C. (Somerville)

Bob Nemeth

Biography

Bob graduated from East West College of Massage Therapy in Portland, Oregon in 1978 and has been practicing for 30+ years as a licensed professional bodyworker ever since. Bob has always placed tremendous importance on the value of continuing education as a way to best serve the needs of his clients. This burning desire to find out as much as he could about how the body works and how to serve the body’s own healing powers brought him face to face with some of the leading practitioners in the diverse field of health care.

In addition to his training, Bob has also spent years of practice in clinical settings, working with chiropractors, physical therapists as well as an orthodontist. Techniques employed include: Spinal Reflex Analysis, Rehab Myotherapy, Myofascial Release, Deep Connective Tissue Work, CranioSacral Therapy, Bio Energy Synchronization Technique, Trigger Point Therapy, Neuromuscular massage and Positional Release Technique.

Bob says:

“The number one reason I got involved with massage thirty two years ago was a deep desire to help in alleviating suffering. That gave me purpose and I knew that I had found my place in the world. That deep desire and sense of purpose fueled my interest to find out as much as I can about how the body works and all the reasons why it could present pain. That led me to study with some of the top people in the field of Massage Therapy, in the field of Physical Therapy, Chiropractic, and Osteopathy.

I’ve also been very interested in trying to understand and how to come to terms with the ‘invisible’ causes of stress, specifically the mental/emotional levels and how spirit and/or energy fits into the picture. That led me to become an ordained Interfaith Minister where I could now employ Spiritual Counseling to help deal with matters of the Spirit. I have also trained in what I feel is cutting edge, ground breaking work with energy medicine in how to break the energetic patterning that precedes all physical maladies. This is offered under the heading of Matrix Energetics and Shamanic Healing. In the short time I have been doing this work, I have seen people move through major life changes in a matter of sessions instead of years that it could have taken in traditional psychotherapy. I am very excited about the transformative potential this work holds.”

Fascial Stretch Therapy

Fascial Stretch Therapy is a new cutting-edge technology based on the most recent scientific understanding of how the body organizes itself for movement. Therapist uses a combination of traction, PNF stretching, and conscious breathing – all of which, when combined, lengthens the fascia and not just your muscles. This unique process makes use of multiple planes of movement which targets the entire joint resulting in maximum flexibility, increased power, speed and agility for athletes. For injury recovery and rehabilitation FST is a powerful therapeutic tool for reducing recovery time.

Rehab Myotherapy

An Initial Structural Assessment is required prior to this treatment session. Please select Initial Structural Assessment prior to your first session.

Rehab Myotherapy focuses on chronic areas of pain due to injury or serious muscle strain. During the course of the treatments there is an unwinding of “old tissue patterns” which are responsible for having created your current pain.

The therapist’s goal is to help reorganize (rebalance) your connective tissue and nervous system in order to allow for a more efficient and mechanically correct way of using your body. Generally requires several sessions to be effective.

Shamanic Healing

Before scheduling your initial appointment, please call our office at 617-684-4000 to speak with the therapist.

An ancient form of energetic healing which works on the luminous energy field that surrounds every living body. The Inca Shamans believe that within this energy field is contained a template which animates all of the important details of our lives such as what kind of diseases we will inherit, how we heal, how we age, the same stories & conditions that get played out over and over again in our lives, and so on.

These templates are called imprints which is nothing more than encoded information that is recorded within the luminous energy field, and is similar to the way that information in the form of software programs are stored on a hard disk on your computer. As such, we are able to erase those imprints of dis-order and dis-ease due to past events.

A sports massage therapist may use their forearm or the palm of their hand to bear down on the muscles in your legs and back to separate and relax them and their fingers to put direct pressure on a muscle in spasm, which can be painful but will reduce your pain later. Along with massage we’ll combine deep tissue massage and stretching when necessary to help maximize your muscles’ potential.

I have received many massages over the past 30 years, and always got relief for the various muscle aches I complained about. But NO ONE gave me the kind of therapy and resolution that Bob Nemeth gave me. His interventions go FAR beyond relief. He is intuitive, accommodating, instructive, and healing. — Linda S. (Somerville)

I have been a regular client of Bob’s for the last three years. I run marathons. I get the deep tissue massage once a month and I would definitely recommend it to any serious runner. Bob has helped me get rid of some of my running injuries and also helped me from getting new ones. I would not go anywhere else for a massage! — Stephanie H. (Somerville)

Services Offered:

Testimonials

The first and only therapist I’ve been treated by at MTW is Jan; I absolutely love her and have experienced real results for two different issues over the last year. The first issue was pain that traveled from my right neck and shoulder down through my right forearm. The cause and triggers of the pain were tricky to pinpoint, but Jan began every session by assessing my pain and posture and using that information to customize my treatment. Jan also gave me some tips on how to adjust my work space and posture (I work at a computer all day) to help alleviate the pain I was experiencing. And even though I primarily sought treatment for pain, I left every session feeling totally loose and relaxed. More recently, I’ve seen Jan for prenatal massage. She understands the changes your body goes through during pregnancy and the various aches and pains that can result, and she modifies your posture throughout the session to ensure your ultimate comfort and relaxation.—Erin C. (Somerville)

I was really hurting the first time I went in, and had limited range of motion in my neck and shoulders. Before the massage, Jan spent time asking me questions, analyzing my posture, and even assessing my energy alignment. I’ve read some reviews on here from people who did not like this part of the treatment, but I was grateful for it. I have multiple conditions, and Jan really listened to what I was going through, and I didn’t feel like I lost out on massage time because of it. I told her my main goal was pain reduction, and she definitely helped me with that. She did some cranial massage, which I paid a little extra for. I was warned it would hurt a bit, and it did, but I felt much better afterward and re-gained complete range of motion. Jan has a very calming energy and a holistic approach to massage, incorporating elements of energy work into her techniques.—Theresa C. (Cambridge)

PLEASE NOTE: A 1-hour session is recommended for your initial session/evaluation.

Testimonials

Orion is very professional and incredibly sincere when it comes to offering advice on how to deal with nagging injuries and discomfort. He seems to have an innate ability to focus on the areas that are most in need of attention. I highly recommend Orion. Pure magic.—Christian S. (Somerville)

Orion does a masterful job of working all the knots out of my back and shoulders. And unlike other massage sessions I’ve had in the past, where the effects only lasted a day (or less!), Orion’s massage seems to have really unlocked something in my back such that I’m feeling as limber and good on Day 2 as I did walking out of the room.—Jarasa K.

I had an incredible therapeutic massage with Orion. I had been suffering from complications from Lyme Disease and, by the time I went to him, was in severe pain from arthritis and attendant muscle spasm. I hadn’t slept in two days due to the pain and could barely walk from my car to the elevator. I didn’t think I’d be able to lie still for the massage. However, once Orion began to work on my back and hips, my muscles immediately began to relax. He listened very carefully to what I communicated to him, and checked in with me throughout the massage. I felt a great deal of compassion and kindness from him.—D. F.

I have had plenty of massages before in my entire life and I feel so lucky I landed in his hands. Orion is definitely one the best massage therapist I’ve ever had. I was originally looking for a relaxation massage when I booked the appointment. Them, I met him and he asked about any current injuries. I had actually twisted my ankle while running a couple of weeks earlier. He spent about half of the time concentrated in my ankle, foot, and leg and it felt unbelievably GOOD right after. He was amazingly professional and found the problem right away. He listened to me every minute while exploring the problem area, then treated it and made me feel a lot better than I expected when I got there. He is an incredible therapist. After we finished the massage, he brought me an anatomy book and not only showed me the exact muscle I had injured but also thought me how to properly stretch to continue working on my problem areas. He is a wonderful therapist and I will definitely continue seen him as often as I can. I strongly recommend you try him!—Daniela D. (Medford)

Orion is amazing – he is great to talk to (if you want to talk), remembers your preferences for focusing on certain parts of the body, and is good at explaining why you feel pain/tension in certain places (and stretches that can relieve said pain!)—Suzanne L. (Somerville)

Rochele Jones

Biography

Since graduating from the Galen Institute of Massage Therapy in 2002, Rochele has felt strongly that her treatments should leave her clients feeling balanced and ready to face the day. She uses strong and steady lengthening techniques to reduce tension which allows her clients to feel relaxed even when receiving deep pressure. When doing Integrative Bodywork/Massage she can also incorporate craniosacral therapy, reiki, myofascial or deep tissue into your treatment. From 2005-2008, Rochele worked on many professional athletes which helped to broaden her knowledge of sports massage and injury recovery.

Rochele’s passion lies with pre/postnatal massage, helping moms-to-be and new moms with the changes their bodies (and lives) undergo. With over 10 years experience working with prenatal clients and being a mom of two young children herself, she understands fully the benefits massage can have within the family unit. Calm and relaxed parents create calm and relaxed babies. Rochele implemented and teaches our Infant Massage Instruction series. She has been teaching infant massage to new parents since becoming certified by the International Association of Infant Massage in 2008. As a massage therapist, she enjoys nothing more than being able to work with a client throughout her pregnancy and then teach her the gift of massage which greatly enhances the bond with her new baby.

Services Offered:

Testimonials

I want to tell you that Rochele is excellent. I really value someone who can into the deep knots on my quads, hamstrings, etc. She is able to get at those adhesions that I can’t remove even if I stretch for hours! Even though I was tight before I saw Rochele, today I ran and felt great.—Liz W.

Now that I’ve had a few sessions with Rochele, I can tell you that she’s amazing! She does a great job of listening to what your needs are and making the massage fit those needs. She’s especially good at getting those tricky knots in your back that you never even knew existed.—Tony Z.

This is the only place I go for a massage and it never disappoints. I usually get deep tissue massages which get expensive, but their therapeutic massage has the perfect amount of pressure (they customize it to how you want). I actually can’t even imagine how much pressure the deep tissue here would have, you might leave with bruises. Rochele is my go-to girl, she’s very fluid and listens to you when you say what you want. I also like how they show you different stretches at the end that you can do at home to help ease the tight muscles you came in to treat. Can’t wait to go back.—Kelley R.

Jeffrey McLeod

Biography

Jeffrey specializes in treating soft tissue strains resulting from sports, general injuries, or poor posture. He uses deep tissue, trigger point, stretching, positional release, and gentle massage in his sessions. His current training is preparing him to offer Structural Integration bodywork, an advanced approach to reversing long-term effects of injury and trauma. Jeffrey McLeod entered the massage world on an interesting path. He has been an engineer, a teacher, and a manager in restaurant and retail settings. This varied past has made him a calm quiet listener — many people start feeling better just talking with him. Jeffrey’s sessions are driven by a combination of both science and intuition.

Although he can see the body as a structural machine, he also understands that many patterns of tension come from emotional or postural sources. By identifying and treating these areas, the client finds more ease in their bodies and in their lives. Although he excels at “going deep,” Jeffrey also acknowledges the power of a good relaxation massage. After graduating from Cortiva Institute in Watertown MA with a 4.0 GPA, Jeffrey was immediately asked to be a Teaching Assistant and still enjoys that role today. He is trained in Swedish, Deep Tissue, Neuromuscular Release, Sports Massage and, Myofascial Release.

“It can be a hard path that we all must walk. I see it as my job to soften tissue and increase mobility so that each client can travel that path a little lighter and with more ease. I see myself as a teammate for that journey.”

Oncology Massage

People in all phases of the journey through cancer can benefit from healing touch and carefully tailored massage therapy. Oncology Massage can help manage symptoms and side effects of cancer and cancer treatment, including pain, nausea, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety and depression. Most of all, oncology massage is a nurturing experience designed to restore your sense of positive touch and an integrated body which helps encourage your body’s healing process.

MTW’s style of Oncology Massage incorporates gentle strokes, energy work and guided meditation to encourage deep relaxation of the body, mind and spirit. The mental and emotional stresses of dealing with cancer can begin with diagnosis, wax and wane throughout treatment, and sometimes linger even after a full recovery. Massage is a way of taking time out to care for your whole self during this often grueling, always individual process.

There are only a few instances where touch is contraindicated for a cancer patient, but your therapist will work with you and your doctor to learn exactly what is the right level of massage for you at any point during your treatment and recovery.

Testimonials

Jeffrey released about 12 years of tension with integrated deep tissue massage. I honestly hadn’t felt this calm and relaxed in my entire life.—Stephanie N. (Cambridge)

I’ve been back a few times now and see Jeffrey. He has been very helpful to me, mentally and physically—as well as emotionally. I feel so relaxed and better almost seconds into settling in on the table.—Melissa M. (Medford)

On my morning run my Achilles hurt so much I actually had to stop and walk. I did the sports massage. Jeffrey showed me how to do some stretches and then massaged out my legs, back, and shoulders (“always the shoulders when I know the person is a student.”). He even showed me how to do the stretches on my own even though we did them as partners. He explained to me why my sitting job and my active lifestyle aren’t meshing so well. The sitting makes my muscles contract in a way that the active life style doesn’t particularly like. So the stretches will help me to alleviate the tension on my own.—Mahina K. (Boston)

I had a great experience in a 2-hour massage with Jeffery Mcleod. He was very knowledgeable, professional and personable. I went in looking for general muscle release of my lower body from sports. Jeffrey spent about 10 minutes stretching my legs before the massage. He was very conscientious during the massage about certain areas that could be tender and checking if the pressure was appropriate.

The location is great in the center of David Square and the office and massage space is clean professional. I spoke with two different people to schedule and check-in and both were very well organized and made the process painless.

I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a quality massage in a professional setting.—Brandon N. (Woburn)

Daniela Martinez-Pacull

Biography

As a licensed physical therapist and licensed massage therapist I bring a great deal of anatomy, physiology, and movement knowledge and experience to my practice. My treatments incorporate neuromuscular, orthopedic, osteopathic, and myofascial techniques that create a well-rounded whole-body approach to a massage session that is unique and individualized.

My treatment approach is beneficial for individuals dealing with chronic pain, back pain, TMJ pain, headaches and migraines, stress tension, athletic injuries, neuromuscular conditions such as MS and Parkinson’s, carpal tunnel and thoracic outlet syndromes, repetitive movement injuries, sacroiliac joint pain, and muscle and joint imbalances, among other conditions.

I am also certified in pre- and perinatal massage therapy, having completed Carol Osborne’s certification course and refinement workshop in 2011 and 2012. Under Carol Osborne’s tutelage I developed the skills and knowledge necessary to provide an effective therapeutic massage to address the physical, physiological, and emotional changes throughout pregnancy.

My passion is to facilitate increased awareness of the body. I sincerely believe that the more aware we are of our posture and movement in our day to day, the less pain and injury we experience because we are already attuned enough to prevent it. And as a student of modern dance, I bring my passion for movement to the education I provide and the hands on work I do.

Services Offered:

Sports Massage

If you’re a runner, we are going to concentrate on your legs; if you’re a swimmer, we will spend more time on your upper body and hips; a cyclist, your hip flexors, quads, ITB, calves and upper trapezius will likely be targeted.

PLEASE NOTE: A 1-hour session is recommended for your initial session/evaluation.
