Stephanie Parsons

Biography

Stephanie believes her life’s purpose is to help other people heal, and using the art of massage therapy is one of her favorite ways to do so. She was trained and licensed in 2007 through Hesser College in Salem, NH. She is trained in Swedish and relaxation massage, Deep Tissue and Trigger Point Therapy techniques, Hot Stone Massage, and has had some training in The Benjamin Institute Technique which focuses on ligament injuries. She is also trained in Prenatal Massage which she has become more passionate about in recent years after the birth of her son. Through this experience she has learned that releasing the fear and preconceived notions we have about birth allows women to trust that their bodies will soften, and open naturally. Prenatal Massage is a tool in breaking the Fear-Tension-Pain cycle. She believes this empowers women to become warriors and gives a better chance at having a pleasant birth experience.

A session with Stephanie includes a detailed conversation of your daily activities to find out your repetitive movements and possible problem areas, that may be causing imbalances you weren’t even aware of, a treatment that will zero in on your requested areas of focus as well as the secondary muscle groups to requested areas, and a follow up with recommended homework that might include specific stretches or yoga poses to ensure you gain the most benefit from your time together.

Did we forget to mention she is also a trained yoga instructor? Several trips to West Africa allowed her to volunteer with children, which included teaching them yoga, how to read, and various other topics.

Deep Tissue Massage

Quite different from “a Therapeutic Massage with Extra Pressure,” our Deep Tissue Massage focuses on releasing muscle restrictions (adhesions) and re-balancing structural tension (holding patterns) running through the several layers of soft tissue (muscle). Deep Tissue Massage requires a much slower pace than our Therapeutic Massage and more than one session is usually necessary for better results and/or resolution. Very effective if you have strained a muscle resulting in limited (and possibly painful) movement.

IMPORTANT: While it is not unusual for some people to experience bruising and pain for several days following treatment it does not happen to everyone. Soon the pain will decrease and you will begin to experience a range of movement you haven’t had for a very long while. Eventually, that every-day pain thing will be just a distant memory.

PLEASE NOTE: 30-MINUTES WILL ONLY ALLOW ENOUGH TIME TO WORK ON ONE REGION OF THE BODY (muscles of your thigh, calf, forearms or hands, etc.). One hour is highly recommended for your first session.

Prenatal Massage

This is one of our most appreciated massages. Our 1-hour Prenatal Massage can help you sleep better and even boost your energy. Change, even a welcome change, is stressful. A soothing massage which helps your muscles adapt to the changes your body is undergoing, and can help you more easily adjust to the many physical and emotional changes happening to your body during pregnancy.

Pregnancy creates a multitude of changes in the body, mind and spirit. Let us help you adjust to them gracefully with reduced pain and discomfort.  Prenatal Massage can help you sleep better and boost your energy. Your therapist will communicate with you about where you are in your pregnancy and will make adjustments to your session accordingly. Depending upon your need for comfort, prenatal massage can be done in a side-lying position, bolstered with pillows and blankets. Your health & comfort is our first priority.

If you are experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, please be aware that massage can be contraindicated in certain situations. It that’s the case, we must ask that you please be prepared with a written note from your doctor stating that massage is not contraindicated for you at this time.

Please indicate when making your appointment how many weeks along you are in your pregnancy.

Sports Massage

If you’re a runner, we are going to concentrate on your legs; if you’re a swimmer, we will spend more time on your upper body and hips; a cyclist, your hip flexors, quads, ITB, calves and upper trapezius will likely be targeted.

A sports massage therapist may use their forearm or the palm of their hand to bear down on the muscles in your legs and back to separate and relax them and their fingers to put direct pressure on a muscle in spasm, which can be painful but will reduce your pain later. Along with massage we’ll combine deep tissue massage and stretching when necessary to help maximize your muscles’ potential.

Therapeutic Massage for Children

FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 18

The pressures of school academics and intramural sports sometimes takes a toll on a child’s body. Stress can affect a child’s ability to sleep soundly and/or stay focused on daily lessons. Athletic injuries can occur at any age and often do. Soccer, for example, requires a great deal of running which can result in very tight ITBands and calf muscles.

A 30-minute massage is recommended for a young child when too much stress is suspected as being a causative factor in the child’s health, or a longer 45 minute session when the issue is a chronic one.

PLEASE NOTE: A PARENT’S PRESENCE IS REQUIRED.

Pricing

  • 30-minute Therapeutic Massage: $45
  • 45-minute Therapeutic Massage: $60

Ammon Embry-Pelrine

Biography

Ammon is professionally trained in both therapeutic and relaxation-focused massages, and has worked in both spa and physical therapy environments since 2012. He is very adept at finding those areas of your body that need attention, and then explaining how to adjust your body mechanics in order to diminish those problematic cycles of pain.

Having been trained in martial arts throughout his childhood, and then years later as a dance instructor Ammon developed a deep appreciation for mind/body awareness and learned to observe the body mechanics of his clients with a highly-tuned focus. Eventually, Ammon became a classically-trained musician, and his use of vibration (sound) as a healing agent during massage became a natural extension of his healing nature and massage technique.

Heidi Seekins

Biography

Heidi received her initial massage training at East-West College of the Healing Arts in Portland, Oregon, where she was trained in Swedish, Deep Tissue, Myofascial and Prenatal modalities. Since graduating she has studied Trigger Point Therapy, advanced Deep Tissue techniques, and TMJ treatment.

Heidi spent the first three years of her career in Oregon, working in a chiropractic wellness clinic where she worked extensively on clients with auto accident injuries, as well as clients with work- and sports-related injuries and chronic pain. After returning to Boston, she spent two years working at a physical therapy / sports and fitness center. Many of her clients here were concurrently in physical therapy or personal training programs, and she worked with the PTs/trainers to create a specialized plan of care for each client/patient.

Heidi’s massage technique draws on a variety of modalities and styles, using whichever is most useful in a given situation to treat clients’ soft-tissue dysfunction and pain. She recruits client participation as needed to maximize muscle relaxation and trigger point release, using a range of techniques. Her touch has been described as “gentle and deep at the same time”. She especially enjoys working with clients who have chronic tension, pain, or injuries, helping them get to a point where their conditions are no longer interfering with their activities or quality of life.

Integrative Bodywork

AN ACUTE INJURY USUALLY OCCURS WHEN WE’VE PUSHED OUR MUSCLES BEYOND THEIR NORMAL RANGE-OF-MOTION OFTEN RESULTING IN PAIN.

Integrative Bodywork combines several healing bodywork modalities with therapeutic massage. Some of those modalities might include: CranioSacral therapy, Trigger Point therapy, Myofascial Release, Deep Tissue, Positional Release, Neuromuscular Facilitation, Reiki, and acupressure. Very effective in treating some chronic pain issues such as sciatica, acute injuries such as whiplash, sports-related injuries, carpal tunnel and other repetitive stress injuries (RSIs), plus physical traumas such as accidents involving falling-down, bicycling, and automobiles.

1-hour usually gives the therapist enough time to focus on those areas of the body associated with the pain or injury. Several treatments are often necessary to understand and resolve the issue(s).

Stress-reduction Massage

This is the kind you’re most likely to encounter at a spa. Stress-reduction massage can also induce a state of mind called the Relaxation Response, which has been shown to minimize the effects of stress and boost your immune system. Everyone knows that a stressful day will cause the muscles in your shoulders and neck to tighten. For some, symptoms can even include a tense jaw, back ache, fatigue and headaches. When you’re feeling overwhelmed and even simple movement is stiff, our Stress-reduction Massage is likely to bring you immediate relief.

For more severe or chronic pain you should consider our Therapeutic Massage.

Therapeutic Massage

OUR SIGNATURE MASSAGE. Blends a general Swedish-based massage with muscular therapy techniques to reduce significant tension due to either muscle strain or excessive stress. Some discomfort may result during treatment but a renewed sense of ease and feeling relaxed should last for several days. All sessions are customized for individual needs.

With that in mind, we ask that you please communicate with your therapist about the technique and pressure to be used. You may need to upgrade to one of our Advanced Bodywork modalities (see Integrative Bodywork or Deep Tissue Massage) if your pain involves several muscles or fascial lines. But if your wish is to feel relaxed and still have some of your pain & tension reduced our Therapeutic Massage is probably right for you.

PLEASE NOTE: 1-hour is recommended when it’s your initial session.

At MTW we strongly feel that because you have a tension pattern that is unique to you, your session should be customized to meet your individual needs/issues. Our therapists are skilled in many healing modalities which they combine to provide you with a truly therapeutic experience for your mind, body and spirit. Our hope is to educate and encourage you to be an active participant in your own health and wellness.

A Structural Bodyworker’s Perspective

A series of observations about the way people sit, stand, and move (or barely move in some cases)

by Richard Green – Executive Director, MTW

In the time since we published our previous newsletter I have worked with no fewer than fifteen new clients all of whom have low back and/or hip issues as a direct result of their work-posture! Roughly half of those clients work out 3 or 4 days a week either doing some variation of a squat with weights or a sustained lunge. The result is significant pain which does not “heal” on its own.

My solution? It’s two-part.

My first task is to identify which specific muscles have become strained and then shortened & locked-down to protect against further injury. My next task is to start bringing relief to the body using massage which also allows me the opportunity to explore the extent of tension in the various regions (neck, shoulders, back, hips, etc). Once I have enough information to conjecture a few possibilities of why there was (or, likely, still is) a need for your Mind/Body to respond the way it did we next move into the next (and possibly the final) phase of pain resolution, neuromuscular integration. For me this is the most important part of the treatment. This is when I re-balance the tension within each functional structure (i.e. your shoulder joint, your hip joint) and integrate them so that they perform their functions efficiently as a single unit.

The second part of the solution rests with you, the client. For obvious reasons a therapist can only do so much. As soon as you leave our office you are on your own and you will need to be vigilant. If the primary cause is left unrecognized it is highly likely to re-offend and undo the progress we achieved during treatment. Mindfulness is the key to success. Start making it a habit to notice everything you do – how you sit, walk, run, stand, read a book, stand waiting for a bus, etc. and remember to take time every day to sit & relax for at least 20 minutes.

This is what I suggest you do right away if you are dealing with consistent back pain:

  • Re-train yourself to sit at your PC in an upright position whenever possible (unless it’s for a very brief time; then it doesn’t really matter).
  • Your back should be able to rest against and be supported by the back of the chair.
  • Start with your arms dangling at your sides.
  • Then, bend your arms at your elbows without raising your shoulders.
  • Instead of reaching for the keyboard by moving your arms & elbows forward move the keyboard closer to you.

If, instead of a PC, you use a laptop or tablet you will have to deal with the additional challenge of looking down at the screen. Unfortunately, the only method I know of which addresses that is not one of prevention but response. You will need to undo the effects of looking down. Since the reverse of looking down is looking up what you’ll need to do every day is to either sit back with your head bent back with your chin up, or lie face-up on a bed with your head hanging off the edge. Either way gravity is now working for you instead of against you (so to speak), and those chronically tight muscles in the back of your neck finally will be able to unlock & relax. Two or three minutes is all that is needed to make a difference.  Ultimately, you will need to find/make time to have one of our massage therapists work on your neck and restore its structural integrity.

A Structural Bodyworker’s Perspective

A series of observations about the way people sit, stand, and move (or barely move in some cases)

by Richard Green – Executive Director, MTW

Last month I introduced you to the role of your hip flexor muscles. Now every time you lean forward, whether sitting or standing, you should be aware that you are engaging your psoas muscles which incidentally are attached to your low back. So, if you’ve been experiencing back pain regularly, say at the end of a work day when you attempt to rise up from your chair but your low back says “not so fast; I need to let go first”, you need to start thinking about making some changes to your sitting posture.

We’ve all heard how everything in the body is connected to everything else. Well it’s true! What we weren’t told us that our nervous system is wired to notice everything we do, both consciously and unconsciously. The posture you take on when doing each activity is merely your variation of the way others do it: the way you sit, reach, raise your shoulders, extend your legs (or tuck your legs under). I’ll bet that no one else in the world does it exactly as you do. In other words, there’s always another way, perhaps even a better way, to do the same thing! So now we need to help you come up with a better, less stressful, more functional way to work at your desk and computer.

Ok. Let’s start with your chair. (Oh, so you’ve been seriously considering switching to a standing desk because it’s supposed to help your back. Well, yes and no. Yes it will help you deal with your current pain; however, other muscles will be forced to engage in order to hold you up, and how long before they start to fatigue and complain?) Ultimately, the overall best solution will be one where your body is properly supported without any assistance from your muscles. With the right chair you’ll be able to relax your shoulders, sit upright AND have back support! Stop by our office any time; we have two samples in our office for you to try out. In next month’s newsletter we’ll discuss additional changes you may need to make with your workstation in order to take advantage of that new chair.

A Structural Bodyworker’s Perspective

A series of observations about the way people sit, stand, and move (or barely move in some cases)

by Richard Green – Executive Director, MTW

I’m going to make an assumption: if you are reading this you are very likely leaning your body forward. So how often do you do that, or it may be easier to calculate how often do you not do that?

Alright, so what’s my point here? Unless you are from another planet repeatedly maintaining a forward-lean posture for longer than a few minutes is going to cause your lower back to tighten up. Include neck & shoulder tension to that if you’re working on your laptop or smartphone. Now consider how many of the following situations you engage in on a regular basis:

  • working at a computer
  • reading a book in bed
  • riding a bicycle
  • driving a car
  • running, hiking, rollerblading or similar
  • kayaking, surfing or similar
  • weight-training or similar

Well, hopefully you get my point. We all do it a lot, and it’s called hip-flexion. I’ll even bet that you know someone who has been complaining for a while about their back and how much it hurts much of the time. Well, help is not far away. Next month, we’ll look at the steps a person can take to get control of their back pain which in many cases can eventually result in a pain-free back.
